About Ajloun
The Ajloun Forest Reserve
The Ajloun Forest Reserve is one of the best outdoor hiking areas of Jordan. It is easily reachable from Amman and has a unique, green environment. This makes it the perfect area for hiking. The Jordan Trail as well as the Abraham Trail runs right through the beautiful oak forest, teeming with biodiversity.
In 1988, the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) declared the area as a nature reserve. Even though there are efforts to bring more tourists into the north of Jordan, the Ajloun Forest reserve is still largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism.
In addition to its unique biodiversity, hikers can enjoy numerous archeological in the area, such as Tell Elias, where prophet Elias was said to have ascended to heaven. Today, visitors can see the ruins of an old church, as well as some beautiful mosaics.
What to see during the hike
The people of the area are extremely friendly, as everywhere across Jordan, frequently inviting hiker to join them for a cup of coffee.
The Ajloun area is also known for its fruit trees, including strawberries to pistachios, fig, walnut, carob, and many olive trees. In fall, during harvesting time, the people from the Ajloun area can be frequently observed harvesting.
If you want, Hike Jordan can organize hikes and camping in the area. Hike Jordan can also organize experiences for schools, such as learning about biodiversity, or participating in the traditional, annual harvests.
